Is there a difference between light and dark brown sugar? If you don't have one kind can you substitute the other?

Carol,
Dark brown sugar has a stronger molasses taste. It is purely a personal choice which you prefer. It is best to use the sugar that the recipe calls for, however if you don't have one, the other will work just as well.
