Dear Betsy,

If you do not cut the tops off of fresh
strawberries will they last longer?

How do you prevent fresh stawberries from mildew?

Thanks Jean!

Signed, Jean

Dear Jean:
Jean,

You should not cut the tops off of the strawberries until you are ready to use them. To help prevent mildew, the first step is to remove any berries from the container that appear to be going bad to avoid contamination of the other berries. Also it is important not to wash the berries before you are going to store them. You should just cover them with a paper towel and then plastic wrap. Do not wash or hull them until you are ready to use them. Berries need to be refrigerated but will generally only last a couple of days before beginning to spoil so it is always best to use them soon after you purchase them.
